Duty Manager, Gavin tells us about his amazing golfing experiences

With the 148th Open just a week away, we sat down with our Duty Manager, Gavin to hear all about his amazing golfing experiences and to find out who he will be backing at Royal Portrush!

So, Gavin just like our General Manager Malachy you are also a Member of Massereene Golf Club?

Yes, I’m a member of Massereene Golf Club, I have been a member there since I was 8 years old.

You are bound to have some amazing golf stories and achievements to tell us about? What are your most memorable achievements?

When I was a junior, I represented ulster at junior level and competed in interprovincial tournaments. I have been twice club champion at Massereene golf club. My current playing handicap is 4, hopefully with a bit of practice I can get this down a bit.

I also spent a few years caddying on the European challenge tour and a few European tour events. I was fortunate to get to travel to many beautiful parts of the world. My favourite of which being leopard creek in south Africa.

There is an undeniable buzz about Northern Ireland now, what are you most excited about?

It really is such an exciting time in Northern Ireland, with Massereene & Galgorm co-hosting the NI Open which is a joint challenge tour event, having secured great sponsorship. This is going to attract a really strong field. Having caddied at this event at Galgorm a few times, I am excited to see them playing at Massereene. It’s great for the local area.

Also, The British open at Royal Portrush is going to be massive for tourism in NI. All the top players in the world will be here. I’ve played royal Portrush quite a few times. I remember playing the day Rory McIlroy shot a course record 61 as a 16 year old junior, what a score and it was clear he was going to go on to be the superstar golfer that he is.

And, who will you be backing in The 148th Open?

I’ll obviously be supporting Rory, but I would love to see Padraig Harrington do well.

If you could choose anyone to be in our ideal fourball, who would choose?

My ideal fourball would be, Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Seve

Lastly, how fantastic do you believe this Summer will be for Northern Ireland?

This summer of golf in NI is a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have here and our great hospitality. Let’s hope for some nice weather and I’m sure everyone will have a great summer. And, like everyone else I am hoping Rory or one of the other home players can cap it off with a historic open win.
